RENESSA COPELAND

Proposal One

Idea of an Interactive Children’s Book

Thinking about the semester long project I want to create a book that is an educational tool for young children. So basically I want to create a children’s book. I am still toiling with the idea for the theme of the book but I am thinking about doing a nature themed book, that is both informative with text but also interactive with hands-on, feel and learn activities. For example I want to bring the elements of nature into this book, such as trees and the elements of trees, water, dirt, grass, etc. I want the book to have different sections. I am drawing on my inspiration from children’s books such as The Magic School Bus.
I am not sure who I am going to do a historical research for this project. I want to do an author who specializes in creating works for children, but not just literature. I am also drawing some of my inspiration from media television shows such as Bill Nye: The Science Guy and Zoom. I like these shows for inspiration because they take science and make it interactive, entertaining, and fun, which is what I want to do in my semester-long book.

  1. Updated Plans:
-Maybe including a triptic, that is a pull-out page.
-Incorporating pictures of children actually interacting with the green earth, that may be collaged (not quite sure yet)
-I want the book to be 8 1/2 by 11 or a spread would be 11 by 17.

  2. I plan on taking many of my pictures over spring break. Some of the pictures that i want to take include:
-Pictures of a child or children interacting with the dirt
-Hopefully, if the snow has not melted all the way...Pictures of a child or children playing in the snow.
-Pictures of children manipulating something not sure yet.

I am still trying to figure out exactly what I want to include. I think that after I start taking picture then I might better understand how I want to lay out my imagines and what other images I want to include.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. My ideas are flexible and I really would love some feedback.

  3. I am debating if I should do step by step photographs of children conducting their own experiments, but I am not sure.

  4. I think that I want to have the focus on the book to be how kids actually interact with things in the environment.
So I want kids to show why they think that these things in the environment are important.
For example I want them to show me why they think that dirt, or the sun, or grass is important. I am I going to take a picture of them and then have text and image collaged in that manner.
