RACHEL RECKLING

Studio Art: Photobook
2/3/09
Proposal 1 for SL Project

For my Semester Long Project, I intend on creating a photo book based around imagination. One of my favorite plays is William Shakespeare’s A MidSummer Night’s Dream. I plan to use the very last monologue of the play as the basis of my story. The monologue suggests that all of the events that happened throughout the play could be interpreted as a dream and an apology for possibly offending those who got lost in the dream. I think that I could do a lot with playing on the words of the monologue and create a short story about dreams. Each though could be a sentence and each sentence could be a page. I plan for my project to be extremely colorful, and almost like a children’s book. I will be using my own drawing skills as well as pictures that I will be taking and photo shopping to create a cartoonish look to my photo book. I want to use the last monologue of the play as a way to keep the reader thinking and imagining. I do not want the dream to end with the last page of my photo book. I want the dream to continue. I plan to do this by catching the readers attention with pop-ups, bright colors, glitter, and abstract shapes. I decided that I wanted to do a project like this because I wanted to incorporate my love for acting and the theater, which is my major, in my photo book as well as tell a story through one of my favorite plays. I think that the semester long project will be fun and interesting for me and I think that my concept is a good one. Plus, it is a complete 180 from my Found and Bound Project which is very dark. I want to show some versatility in my art work.

  1. Revisions and Ideas:
    - childlike, not childrens book
-each page will have a group of pictures for one sentence of the monologue example: "If we shadows have offended"= 5 pages devoted to shadows and being offended
-Colors= black, and pastel colors. I want a warped, circusy feel to it
-The words in the monologue will be in cursive
-My book size will be medium

  2. Today my group and I put together our photobook for project 2. It was really cool to see everyone else's work. It gave me ideas for my final project. I really want to use digital photos but looking at Ellie's work I want to do more contrasts between far and close objects. I really liked her spreads.

  4. Ideas for Sl Project:
-I decided to mix black and white photos with color. I want to see how that turns out
    - Most of my shots have been very random so far. I like the spontaneity of my pictures so far

  6. Ideas for SL project:
-While I was doing my test spreads for tomorrows class..I realized that my childlike theme was not really working.I think I'm going to keep the book more on the serious side.
-I might use color for the text only

  7. Ideas for SL Project:
-today i drew a layout of the first 16 pages for my book. I'm having trouble figuring out with photo would go best for the spread that says "think but this and all is mended"
    - I don't kno if I should add periods and/or commas at the end of thoughts within the monologue

  8. Ideas for SL Project:
-I decided to not use color anymore. I think that my book will look more mysterious which is what I'm going for since Puck, the character who says the monologue I'm using for my book, is mysterious
-I figured out what pictures to use for the sentence I was having trouble with, "think but this and all is mended" I decided to put a warped tree that I took

  9. Ideas for SL project:
-I decided to go with Chrome as my publisher. I was able to view their photobook dimentions easily and they seemed to be the only company with 8.5 x 11 books.

  10. Artist Talk: Response to Polaroid Stories

Polaroid Stories was the third play of the semester. I was lucky enough to be a part of it. The show was intense and was about drug use, prostitution, and the lives of street kids. Being involved in this play was a great experience because I was able to play a character that I had never played before. This show made me go above and beyond roles that I’m use to. It was challenging at first to go above and beyond what you are use to but that is what theater is about.
The character I played name was Persephone. I was known as the queen of the underworld of the drug infested place all of the characters lived in. I was the most experienced in drug use, and prostitution and I was kind of like the mother to most of the other women characters. I had a huge attitude but I was knowledgeable and I made that knowledge known through my stories and through the way I presented myself to the other characters. I either did different drugs or gave drugs to other characters in the show. I think that performing such illegal acts, even though they were fake, was hard to do and to show in front of so many people. However, I think that showing this was helpful for others to understand that these problems are common in our world today especially with our youth. I feel honored to maybe have changed someone’s life based on my performance and I hope that this show educated others.
I think that theater is a great way to open peoples mind about life. Like visual art, I think that its probably one of the better ways to learn. Theater and art go hand in hand and even though they have different styles, I think that they are both influential parts of life. I focus more on the theater aspect as opposed to the visual art aspect but, I think that being involve in both types has helped me to be more knowledgeable. Being in Studio Art and being a part of the plays here at St. Mary’s has been both enjoyable and helpful for me to figure out what I love in life. I know this response is probably very corny but it’s true. I am glad that I have had the chance to be involved in both kinds of art. The play was a great production to be involved in and I hope that others appreciated watching it as much as I did performing in it.

  11. SL Project Ideas:
-i decided to go with Iphoto instead of Chrome because Chrome seemed to be more complicated than what I think it should be.
    -I'm sending my book tomorrow!
-I made a few changes to my layout of my book but when I was reviewing it I really like the changed I made. I like my book a lot
