MEGAN KELLY

For my semester long project, I have a couple of ideas… My first idea is regarding the use of space. I would like to observe the use of space. My idea comes from Irving Penn’s photographs of the same space with different people, studying their reactions. In this series of photographs, Penn sets up a corner space in his studio and chooses different subjects to stand in the corner. Each photograph, although the same space is used, is remarkably different and portrays personalities of his different subjects. I like this idea because people and their every day interactions really interest me. I also enjoy photographing people in general. I think that reactions to certain places and spaces show a lot about an individual without words… similar to opening up a present and seeing an initial reaction. I may or may not incorporate props into the space or spaces that I choose.

Another idea that I have is to get up close and personal with people… photographing their faces and drawing out every detail in them. My inspiration for this comes from photographers such as Richard Avedon and Amy Liebowitz. The amazing ways that they (as well as many other photographers) photographed their subjects created amazing and alluring portraits. I have other ideas regarding the theme of being “up close” and personal as well… ideas including body painting and juxtaposing wild with tame (business with party) I think that this would allow for creative expression not only on my behalf, but on the behalf of those that I would be photographing. These are my favorite ideas and I would like to further discuss them.

Whichever project I choose to take on, I want it to be funky (for lack of better wording at the moment) and very loud (maybe like Daft Punk… or maybe more like Girl Talk).

  1. Idea:
Juxtaposing traditional, black and white portraits shot with film and digital color portraits with intensity and paint.
Black and white photos, white background
Color paint photos, in the woods.

  2. Another idea:

Showing the transformation from the traditional ideas of portraits to more experimental ideas... perhaps showing the progression from one to another by shedding clothing, adding color, and changing film to digital.

  5. Ideas:

Reworking the format of my book. Have a middle spread woods shot as the center meeting point of my two characters and have it working outwards from there. Ellie will leave the work place and make it to the woods in the first half of the book and Tyler will leave the woods and make it to the work place in the second half of the book. In the first spreads, have a hint of Tyler... maybe his arm handing her papers and in the last spread, have a hint of Ellie in the woods... maybe running a blur around Tyler. This would add to the time effect in the sense that the book would be circular, but interrupted by their parallel lives.

Another possibility is to have the book open vertically... but I think that I want all of my spreads to be horizontal. If the book is horizontal, I will be able to juxtapose photos of Tyler and Ellie and draw out similarities and differences in their current state of mind and place, but I like my first idea a lot better for this.

I also am not sure if I am starting in black and white anymore... black and white will break up the book a lot, but could also add to the effect of being unhappy and bored (even though I really like black and white photography). I will have to continue to think about this, but I also worry about the fading color effect, because I think that it could look very tacky very easily.

Idea, change the saturation of the shots. For the bland shots, have the color less saturated and for the happy shots, have the color extremely saturated and poppy... this will show a nice difference in mood and will add to the transition that each of these characters undergoes.

I also need to remember to be careful about shots from behind, because both of my characters have long blond hair and could get mixed up very easily.

So now I need to do some re-shoots on a sunny day. Horizontal shots only... I want full bleeds for all of my shots. Pay attention... make sure that there is extra space to allow for the gutter of my book.
